Effective Networking Can Lead to Unforeseen Opportunities
By: Jason Jacobsohn
Though the definition of ?business networking? may vary slightly from individual to individual, one constant is that networking is about meeting and connecting with others for a purpose.
Think of networking as the process of continuously connecting with others to build mutually beneficial relationships. When done right, it can lead to new opportunities.
Career Opportunities
Many people network to find career opportunities (such as a new job, consulting work or a chance to develop new skills). By building relationships with others, these opportunities will present themselves.
When you meet people, it?s OK to let them know what you need even (if you are looking for a new job). Just make sure you come off sincere and offer to help them before you ask for assistance.
Ways to offer help include taking on a consulting project, connecting people together or providing resources. After you help people, they will be more inclined to help you with your needs.
It doesn?t usually take too long before someone will return the favor and help you. So long as your help was valuable and appreciated, people will generously assist you.
One way people sometimes earn extra money or dabble in a potential new career is through independent consulting. When meeting people at networking events, it?s fairly easy to offer your consulting services to others (especially if you are willing to work for free).
By taking on free projects, you will have a good opportunity to build up your skills and it may lead to a full-time position. A great way to prove yourself to potential employers is to do some pro-bono work.
Throughout my networking, I continuously offer to help people whenever I can (especially entrepreneurs). Entrepreneurs can always use help and they generally don?t have much money to pay consultants. This is why I usually do pro-bono work.
Because of my background and skills, I?m able to help entrepreneurs with their business plans, strategy and investor presentations. One reason I enjoy assisting entrepreneurs is because it allows me to keep these business skills fresh and it could lead to a new career opportunity.
Business Opportunities
Another reason that many people network is to find business opportunities (such as customers and partnerships). Just like career opportunities, building relationships with others is important for opportunities to present themselves.
When meeting people, let them know about your business needs. Chances are that someone will be able to help you. At the same time, ask others how you can help them. Either way, make sure you follow up with individuals so they remember to help you.
If you successfully help others and they successfully help you, this is a win-win situation for everyone. Building these types of relationships will be important for future business needs.
While networking, you will be able to share with others that you are trying to sell a product or service. So long as you don?t come on too strong and still offer to help others, you may be able to find some potential customers or sales leads.
Finding partnerships is another business need that can be easily met through networking. By talking with your contacts, you should be able to get some referrals that can lead to some business relationships.
Make sure you keep yourself fresh in the minds of your contacts so they remember you when you approach them for help. Be creative and find ways to keep in touch.
Volunteer Opportunities
If you want to get involved with professional organizations, networking is a great way to find these opportunities. Do your research and decide which groups interest you. Once you decide on the groups you want to help, attend their meetings or events and get to know the volunteers.
Seek out the board members and let them know you want to get involved.
Because most organizations can use help, it shouldn?t be very difficult to get involved if you express interest. You?ll build some great relationships and leadership skills. Over time, your involvement in an organization will help you to become noticed in networking circles.
After all, having people remember you is a benefit of effective networking.
Final Thought
Whether you?re looking for career, business or volunteer opportunities, networking effectively can help you with your needs. So long as you understand that networking is about helping others before you ask for help, you will have success with your networking.
